How do we approach the choosing of masks with students?

It is important that we approach our choice of masks with care as masks are often playing with archetypes, personality traits that can be found in all human experience, and we have to be careful when devising work not to slip into stereotypes. For this reason, whenever we begin a devising process we suggest asking questions about the choices we’re making to ensure that we have a good reason for using masks in the way we intend to use them.

The choice about which mask to choose should be looked at within the context of the story and the drama that your making as well as within your own experience. A good question to ask yourself is “Am I providing a representation of this character supported by my own lived experience?”. We are careful when discussing this with students to ensure that they think wisely about the choice they are making. Before getting into mask we will discuss with the students how important it is that the mask creates the illusion for the audience that it is their face, giving examples such as using hair / hats to cover the break between mask and skin and not putting the mask on or taking it off in front of the audience. We find that this also helps the students to consider closely the tone of mask they are choosing.
